A BUFFALO CENSUS
A GIGANTIC TASK One of the little jobs given to a Government official in Canada was .to find out how many buffalo there were in tho Dominion. He had a gigantic, it romantic, task, for he had to cover some 17,5C0 square miles of rough-won. !<■ i country in which tho animals roam at; will. His first reconnaissance was made from the air, and then, getting down .to details, he covered more than b'OO'J miles by canoe, dog sled and on foot. *» •* now reports that the buffalo are 15.000 strong. Sixty years ago countless thousands of the animals roamed the great plain : of Western Canada, but wholesal slaughter by improvident hunters v> diu-ed their number so much that their very existence was threatened. In H>., the Government of Canada took steps I” avert the tragedy by acquiring tw ■ herds and placing them under Govern meat protection. Since that time both herds have made astonishing gains.
