PUBLIC WORKS STRIKE
HOLD-UP IN AMERICA AIORE PAY DEAIANDED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) WASHINGTON, July 14. The Government faced a strike situation within its owd works programme to-day, as construction on the vast; Boulder Dam project in Nevada was tied up by sympathetic strike,? by several unions, following a walkout of 2(59 carpenters. In all 4000 men were rendered idle. Extra'police are guarding the locality to prevent'clashes if the officials attempt to restart work. The strikers are demanding a reduction of hours and a 25 per cent increase in pay. Meanwhile, the long-delayed public works programme, authorised by law and appropriating £970,000,000, appears ready to swing into action. It is annouaoed that £90,000,000 has been allocated for 000 projects in New York, and it is hoped to have 100,000 men at work ia that State within 00 days. In all, the Government hopes to employ 3,500,000 men, although Administration critics insist that it is impossible to got the nesessary projects under way before mid-winter, if at all.
