GOOD PROGRESS MADE

MEAT NEGOTIATIONS AIR. ELLIOT’S REVIEW SOME POINTS DECIDED (British Official Wireless.) Rec. noon. RUGBY, July 15. The 1 , House of Commons passed by 242 votes to 42, rite financial resolution' moved by Mr Walter Elliot to extend 10 the end of June, 1030, the subsidy from the cattle fund at a cost not exceeding £3,000,000. Mr Elliot said that the proposal did not indicate a breakdown of the negotiations, which were still taking place, with the 'Governments of the Dominions and the Argentine on the longterm proposals Of the. Government. The negotiations were necessarily difficult and protracted, for they concerned a trade which involved £100,000,000 per annum. In the last few days they had secured i voluntary agreement with Australia ind New Zealand which would govern the supplies of.mutton and lamb to the British market to the end of 1930. Arrangements had 'been made for supplies of frozhn pork, excluding baconjrs,.'during dhe next; six months. Definite arrangements for supplies jof beef and veal. had been made with Australia and New Zealand. They were beginning to tackle the difficult question of the entry of the Dominions into the chilled beef market. These interlocking arrangements were precisely those the Government desired to see carried through by agreement, and it was to bring them to a triumphant conclusion that further provision was necessary. When the final agreement was reached, it was the intention that the Exchequer subsidy should be replaced by a levy subsidy.
