DIABOLICAL PLOT
MURDER WITH GERMS INDIAN TRIAL ENDS
CALCUTTA, Feb. 16,
India's most sensational trial ended with death sentences on Benoyendra Pandey and Dr. Taranath Bhattaeharya, who wero convicted of conspiring to murder Amarendra Pandey. stepbrother of Benoyendra Pandey, by the injection of deadly germs. Amarendra Pandey was a .wealthy owner of property which his stepbrother desired to inherit. The prosecution alleged that the murder was plotted with diabolical ingenuity. Benoyendra Pandey, aided by his doctor friends, unsuccessfully attempted to kill Amarendra Pandey by smearing tetanus germs inside his spectacles. The prosecutor alleged that Dr. Taranath Bhattaeharya, aided by Dr. Sivapada, then obtained plague bacilli from a o“ nital in Bombay and the germs were injected in a pinprick while Amarendra Pandey was going home in a crowd. He died, and Dr. Sivapada allegedly issued a false certificate permitting cremation. The Grown suggested that the germs were first tried out on rats and guinea pigs.
