GEMS DISAPPEAR

PEARLS AS LARGE AS WALNUTS

More than £3,000,000 worth of precious objects have disappeared during the transference of the Chinese State treasure from Pekin to Shanghai.

Early last year 3000 chests of treasure wore removed from Pekin because of the danger of a Japanese invasion. The valuables were stored in a museum in Shanghai, which took on the aspect of an Aladdin’s cave. They included pearls as large as walnuts, which illuminated the darkened room, rich tapestries, precious gems worn by former emperors and empresses, and two transparent jade piagodas over two feet high.
