THE EMPIRE SCHEME
SIR M. HANKEY’S MISSION
« (Received Jan. 7, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. G. Sir Maurice Hankey arrived at Glasgow by the liner Duchess of Bedford. He told a reporter that he would neither deny nor confirm the report that he had advocated compulsory military training and a 10 years’ reorganisation of Australian defences. Another reporter says that Sir Maurice Hankey told him: “I won’t deny it completely.” The Sunday Express’ political writer affirms that Sir Maurice Hankey submitted to the Dominions the scheme of Imperial defence already worked out and discussed it in the course of his visit. The scheme proposes (hat lhe component parts of the Empire should contribute finance, personnel and equipment. The Daily Dispatch says that Sir Maurice Hankey is recommending strong air armaments throughout the Empire, the Dominions contributing to the cost.
