200 IN. TELESCOPE DISK
CASTING COMPLETE .WEIGHS 20 TONS NEW YORK, Oct. S. The easting of the 200-in. telescope disk which the Corning Glass Works in New York have undertaken to make for the California Institute of: Technology was completed last, night. The cjislc, which is the largest piece -of solid' glass ever east, weighs about 20 tons. It was poured lgst March, and when taken from its oven last, night was cool enough for workmen tlo walk on.
Whether the present disk will actually be used in the telescope for which it. was ordered is doubtful. The present intention is to use its would for a second casting and to regard the tirst. casting as a “trial horse.” Should the second east meet with any accident, however, the first would then be prepared for insertion into the telescope. This would require its return to the annealing oven for a further 11 months in order to remove minor strains inside the glass. Whichever “eve” is ultimately used, its cost will be in the neighborhood of £IOO,OOO.
