The reception given the Duke was worthy of the best traditions of soldiers, the cheering and singing, and the toasting being honored vociferously, and heard a long distance away. As the Duke himself explained, it was the first- re-union of returned soldiers he had informally attended in New Zealand—the visit to the Returned Soldiers’ Club at Wellington had been an official engagement —and he had appreciated it thoroughly. Deafening cheering greeted the Duke s announcement that the kiivi carved on the hillside close to Bullford was still being painted annually. There was a remarkable demonstration of good wishes as the Duke departed down the cheering ranks of men who, for a- brief hour, had met the Prince not as the Duke of Gloucester, but as a soldier, comrade and man.
A QUIET DAY The Duke of Gloucester spent a quiet Sunday in Nelson. In the morning he attended divine service at the Cathedral, Bishop Hilliard officiating. As tho .tide was on'the turn, he had to go out a considerable distance for depth, but remained in the water for about three-quarters of an hour. There was a moderate surf running and the water was almost tepid. Five' members of the Life Saving Club remained in the water until the Duke left.
