NEW YEAR SPORTS
TE ICARAEA MEETING IN PERFECT WEATHER
WELL VARIED PROGRAMME. More fortunate than their neighbors of Khitarataiii, whose Boxing Day meeting had to lie postponed on account of the l-ain. To Karaka Sports Club held its new year sports meeting under ideal conditions at tlie fine sports ground at To Karaka yesterday. The warm sunny weather drew a very large crowd to the meeting, and the majority of the patrons made a. picnic gathering of it, taking full advantage of the welcome shade provided by the willows. Their material Wants were well catered for in every respect, and the facilities generally were excellent.
Principal interest centred in the athletic programme of amateur and professional events, conducted under (lie control of officials of the Gisborne Ainiitour Athletic and Harrier Club and it lie Poverty Bay I’rofpvsionul Athletic and Cycling Club. The programme of athletics was a very long one, and it was f> o’clock before tile last event was decided, even though an early start had been made. ' A feature of the athletic side of the meeting was 11. S. Davis’ win in the two-mile professional cycling handicap. Davis, who is 51 years of age, produced a wonderful burst of speed at the end of the race, and fought out an exciting finish with a much younger rider to win by a pafrow margin. He is one of the staunchest supporters of the professional club, and his meritorious y.ictory tyas heartily applauded.
The Poverty Bay centre of the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Associa{iqii staged another excellent programme of national dances, and these events were followed with the keenest interest, especially by the womenfolk. The handicap system was again followed. Officials controlling the events were Messrs. W. Jonasen and P. Sim, with Mr. .T. Itunro as steward. Tiie judges were -Miss M. Keany and Mr. li. McKnight, with Miss F. Keany as pianist. Many first-class mounts were paraded for the horse events, and there was some very keen competition ip the jumps, always a popular feature of To Karaka meeting.
