ROT L’Oil’S FAST RUN
A world’s grass track record of 4.15 2-5 for two miles established bvj Itoi l’Or in winning the Royal Cup was the tifstanding feature of the) opening of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Epsom on Thursday. The previous record, 4.19 2-5, was taken by Great Bingen at Epsom; eight years ago when he rail third in) the President’s Haftdic&p. The dirt track records are 4.12 2-5 by Harold) Logan for a place, and 4.15 4-5 by) Indianapolis for a win. Both these horses started in the cup, and the failure of Indianapolis was a blow to investors, for he was a. hot favorite.
Roi l’Or was driven by the veteran trainer, Freeman Holmes, who travelled by aeroplane from Ashburton, arriving a few hours before the race. In his; early days Holmes was a noted horseman, and in 1886 he won the New Zealand Cup on Manton, and later rode. Old winners of many important jumping! events. This was Jiis first winning drive in the Auckland Trotting Cup, but he trained Taloro, who was piloted to victory by his son Maurice in 1905.
