HIGH SCHOOL FUNCTION

Tlip annual broaking-up was celebrated at the Tolaga Bay District High School. Mr. S. AL Kemp addressed the pupils, and congratulated Mr. Calvert on his success in the recent University examinations. He men-, tioncd that measles had severely interfered with the school work, but out of j 17 presented for proficiency Hi had j been successful, the other one reeeiv- ; ing competency. Air. WIGAN SCHOOL FUNCTION

On Wednesday the pupils of the Wigan School were entertained at a picnic for the breaking-up function. The parents and friends had provided lunch and tea. Games were played, and races and Other items were provided with suitable prizes. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs McNab and McNeil, and Mr. 0. G. James thanked those whose generosity made the, function possible. Ho congratulated Mr. Badham on- the results in the proficiency examination, all live candidates being successful. lan James, dux, was presented with a suitable memento. Mr. and Sirs W. I'. Jackson, who have been spending a brief holiday with Mr. and Mrs P. Mitford' Burgess, have left for Clevedon, where they swill be the guests of the latter’s daughter, Mrs M.oneur. Mr. Jackson, who is n noted writer on educational subjects, was very interested in Maori culture and his time here was occupied mainly in obtaining the rudiments of the Mnopi language. A number of Mr. Jackson’s text books are recognised as being among the best of their kind.

Mr. and Mrs George Fitzgerald will be entertaining a house party, mainly composed' of close relatives, for the Christmas celebrations. Among those present will bn Mr. and Mrs Turvoy and family (Napier), Mr. and Mrs Longhcr and family (Pouawa), Mr. and Mrs Harold Fitzgerald and family, Mr. and Mrs Frank Fitzgerald and family, and Mr. and Mrs Lionel Spence and family, nil of Whntatutu. Mr. and Mrs .L B. Morris will be entertaining Mr. and Mrs C. K. Williams and their children, of “Mata-

haia,’’ Mr. and Mrs R. G. SherwoodHale and family (Tokomaru Bay), and Miss Joyce Currie (Wanganui), at Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. T. Fothqringham, Wellington, and their daughter, .Mrs. Greenwell Burney, Sydney, are the guests ot Miss A. Reid, Tolaga Bay. Members of the Tolaga Bay Golf Club farewelledi Mr. and Airs. W, 0. DRyall, who are leaving for Wanganui. After applogiising for the absence of the president, Mr. D. Hawkins, and the vicepresidents, Mr. Morton, club captain, said that during their stay in Tolaga Bay Mr. and Mrs. Ryall had been keen and useful members,' and they would be greatly missed. Mrs. Ryall, who had been ladies’ secretary and a member of the main committee, had been of the utmost help during two trying years, and it, was mainly owing to her keen interest in junior players that so many had joined anil continued lo play despite many obstacles. On behalf of membeis, Mi. .Morton presented Air. and Mrs. Re all with a beautiful silver rose bowl. Mr and Mrs. Jtvnll thanked the members.
