“In general it seems that the time for despondency lias gone, and it is opportune for me to throw out a suggestion to parents that they may with some assurance abstain from undue haste in sending their young sons out into the world, but instead give them that proper time and schooling which will enable them to discover and develop their natural bents. It is, of course, at Christinas time each year that the wholesale quest for employment by boys occurs, but the changing of labor requirements can be well judged by the placing of boys during the currency of the three school terms. Never before in the history of the school has the roll fallen between February and December by such a large amount as 20 per cent., in other words roughly by one pupil in every five, and this is due undoubtedly to a renewed demand for boys in the city."—Mr. F. W. Gamble, headmaster of the Mount Albert Grammar tSchool, Auckland, speaking at the annual prizegiving.
