BRITISH BETTING BILL

COMMONS DISCUSSION AMENDMENT REJECTED (Received November 6. 5 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 5. The House of Commons, in committee on Ihe Betting and Lotteries Bill, an amendment to restore the clause forbidding football pool betting was strongly supported on the ground that this was a glaring social evil to which all football associations were opposed, led to gambling by hoys and girls, and was now creeping into cricket. If was alleged that pressure was brought on the Government to drop the provision. Several Conservatives appealed for a free vote on the question. Sir John Gilmour ignored these, and inLmated that the clause was withdrawn owing to the strong difference of opinion in tho standing committee. The amendment was defeated without division.
