MELBOURNE, Nov. 3
Ten thousand persons were present at the Ballarat Oval on Saturday night for the termination of the South street band championships. New standards in brilliant playing were established. With its points in the A grade, Melbourne Fire Brigades secured'final possession of the Besson Shield. Awards were: A Grade Selection.—Hawthorn, No. 1 test 137, No. 2 test 141, 1; Woolston, 144 and 129, 2; Brunswick, 156 and 135, 3; Fire Brigade, 271. 4. Quickstep.—Fire brigade. 184, 1; Woolston and Malvern Tramways, 180, equal, 2. Aggregate.—Fire Brigade, 455; Hawthorn, 454; Woolston, 453; Malvern Tramways, 448. The judge, Mr. Stephen Yorke, of England, said that the standard was equal to the best in England and that the task of judging had proved very exacting.
