“I cannot imagine Labor coming into power without a first-rate financial crisis,” Sir Stafford Cripps told the Oxford Labor Club. “That’s why there will be a demand for full emergency measures. Unless we are prepared to challenge the whole strength of capitalism the very first day Labor is returned to power, then it will be impossible democratically to retain power and start a programme of socialisation.”
