“North of ’53"
COVENTRY to Winnipeg is a far " cry, but that was as far as Bertram Barker, the author of “North of could got on a few clothes and his ex-service qualifications. Mr. Barker’s many adventures in Canada, and in particular in the Hudson Buy zones, are related in “ North of ’oil. ’ ’
Having to rely on his memory because his diary was lost, Mr. Barker nevertheless is able to show what life in the raw can be, and certainly his dilemmas did not require- a diary to fix them in his mind. The author’s lack of money caused his adventures, for a full purse would have made many of them unnecessary, but then his book -would not have been written. His story of shipwreck by iceberg is a .fitting climax to a positive orgy ,of .escapades, which arc related in a simple but attractive manner.
