HEREFORDS

The Atea Hereford Stud was founded by Messrs.. Wade Bros., Wharekopae, by cows purchased from the late Mr. .1. Fergus,son's stud, Glencoe, l'atutahi, and Mr. R. E. Jefferson, the well known judge and stud breeder, Wairoa, these oeiiig nice quality cows of good breeding, being mated with the well known bull, Homebush Discovery, first and champion at the Poverty Bay Show, 1925 and 1926, bred by Mr. J. C. Field. Tlie next purchase after Homebush Discovery’s progeny was the bull St. Moritz, purchased from F. Moore’s estate, Kaiiwi, Hawke’s Bay. Atea Ist, first prize winner, Poverty Bay Show, 1927. at 2yrs., bred by Wade Bros., had the honor of first place over an imported bull in the same class, Atea Ist being purchased later by Mr. F. E. Humphreys, the well known and successful breeder of Polled Herefords. Messrs. Wade Bros, disposed of their stud herd in 1930 to Harris Bros., who took over Atea station. Tho breeding herd consists of ICO registered cows and heifers, and' in 1932 Harris Bros, purchased two stud sires from Mr. E. M. Hutchinson’s Waihuka stud to mate with the progeny of Homebush and St. Moritz. The. breeding herd is run entirely on the. cold high country, having to rough it like ordinary station cattle.

Messrs. Harris Bios, are offering 16 rising 2yr. Hereford hulls at Matawhero on September 14. The bulls have been running on Avondale station, Hangaroa, since eight months old, and have notbeen pampered in any way. They have had a little hay since June last. The bulls have now established a well-earned reputation for their hardy constitutions and excellent stock of good type, and the breeders feel quite satisfied to leave them to (he discriminations of intending purchasers.
