CHURCH DAMAGED
. . i. jr w ..i . BLAZE AT SYDENHAM i (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Damage amounting to several hundreds of pounds was caused this morning by a fire in St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Colombo street, Sydenham. , Prompt action by the brigade confined the damage principally to the rear of the building, but the loss to the church is considerable, as two pianos were affected by fire and water. A communion set presented at the Suii'dation of the church ifi 1860 was ackcned by the flames. Records were charred, and the walls separating the kitchen from tho vestry, and the rafters were destroyed. The church proper, though filled l with smoke, escaped damage. The cause is not known, but il is believed to have started in the kitchen, where supper had been prepared for a meeting lust, evening.
