SHOPPING IN GISBORNE
NEW FACILITIES SERVICE TO THE NORTH In order to provide facilities for residents of Opptiki and the settlers between, GpotiKi and Gisborne to shop in Gisborne and return home the same day, a new tri-weekly service has been inaugurated by the Duco Motor Service operated by Mr. J. O. Musgrave, with tne approval of the No. 4 District Transport Licensing Authority, which sat here last week. This new service, which was commenced last week, is expected to prove a great boon to those desiring to travel between Opotiki and Gisborne.
By an amendment to the former timetable, there will be a daily service from Opotiki at 6 a.m., and the cars will leave Matawai or Motu as the case may be at 9 a.m. The new service which has just been introduced provides for a car to leave Gisborne at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at 7.30 p.in. on Saturdays, thus enabling shoppers to return from Gisborne the same day. A deputation waited upon the Licensing Authority last week and -presented a petition asking for the retention of a regular car service through Motu and Toatoa between Gisborne and Opotiki, and 1 this petition was received at the time when the authority was considering Mr. Musgrave’s application for the! renewal of his passenger service license. The authority gave Air. Musgrave leave to conduct a service whereby a car will leave Opotiki on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6 a.m., arrive at' Motu at 8.20 a.m., and depart for Gisborne immediately. The return trip will be made the same day, the car leaving Gisborne at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and arriving at Motu at 7.5 p.m.; the Saturday departure will be delayed until 7.30 p.m., and the car will arrive at Motu at 9.30 p.m. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays a car will leave Alatawai on the arrival there of the regular service car from Gisborne, and will travel to Opotiki via Alotu and Toatoa. The settlers of this district, who have suffered comparative isolation since the Waioeka highway became the main motor service route, will thus have regular communication with the north and south restored. As Mr. R. F. Gambrill, chairman of the authority, remarked last week, it is up; to the settlers themselves to justify the granting of the petition by giving full patronage to the new services.
