J. G. Cobbe. Qne of the principal requests was that it should be made an offence to supply intoxicating liquor to females under the age “already recognised by the law of the land”, at cabarets or in motor cays in the vicinity of dance halls. It also recommended that it was-most desirable to appoint women , police for the protection IoL young girls." Replying, Air. Cobbe said there was great difficulty in controlling drinking in motor cars, hut he would go very carefully Into it. Regarding women police, Mr.. Cobbe said: “Careful inquiries are-being made at the preset time, but there are numerous difficulties. However, these difficulties may be overcame. While in America recently, the Premier made inquiries into _ the activities of women police, and those inquiries may lead to something being done In New Zealand.” Assaults by men on children were also referred to by the Minister. He said recently the Chief Justice had sentenced a man to seven years’ imprisonment with 15 strokes of the "cat.” That, he thought, would be a severe lessonIn the matter of the conversion of motor cars,, the Under-Secretary,of Justice was now*making full inquiries, and it was just possible that there might be an amendment of the law next session.
