PATUTAHI NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The rainfall recorded at the Patutahi Government station for April was only .65in., the maximum fall being on April 26, when 42 points fell. Ham fell on five days. It is a coincidence that the fall for April last year was practically the same, .65in. being logged. There was a frost of one degree last night. . There is already a scarcity of teed in pastures for so early in the season, and if frosts prevail in place of the much needed warm rains, the position will soon become acute. Stock, however, is in good condition so far and what is going to;, the freezing works is killing out satisfactorily. The maize harvest has commenced and will soon be in full swing. Some fine heavy crops are to be seen around tile township. This autumn has been one of the worst for laying down permanent pastures. Pumpkin crops do not, promise to be nearly as prolific as usual, and this may he ascribed to the over-growth of vines during the warm February rains. Mr. G. V. Smith’s recent extensive purchases of Aberdeen Angus stud cattle at the disposal sale at Gwavas, Hawke s Bay, arrived yesterday, none the worse for their long journey by motor truck. These valuable animals will be a useful addition to the Waitaria stud. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Burland and family left by car this morning on a holiday visit to Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. They were acompanied by Mrs. T. W. Sewell, who is to visit her parents at "Bishopscourt,” Napier.— Miss M. Martin, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. Frank Hair.—Mr. R. Shorratt, "Swarthmoor,” is spending a few days with his daughter, Mrs. 11, White, Ngatapn, —Mrs. Spence .is staying with her mother, Mrs. E. Bilham.—Mr. Weir, who has been relieving postmaster during the absence of Miss Walker, left last week to relieve at Motu. The position is now being temporarily filled by Miss M. Bilham.
