New Kind of Permanent Waving Simplifies Process

LONDON, Fell. 15. I Have just seen a demonstration of a new kind of permanent waving, which is carried out without any machine, or anv electricity, or any wires. There is none of that stringing iip to the ceiling that is such an alarming adjunct to the usual method, and there is no risk of possible damage through overheating or shortcircuiting, or any of those nightmares that afflict a nervous client when she is left lo ‘; cook ’' in a contraption that terrifies her by its very appearance. I This new method is most reassuring.. The hair is done up in curlers that are self-contained, the subject can walk about freely the whole time. It is impossible for the heat to get beyond a certain specified temperature, 1 the whole performance is immeasurably simplified. The hair is first damped and wound on metal curlers. These are then encased in long paper cylinders, and these cylinders carry the secret of tlie whole method. Each curler generates pure filtered steam by a highly scientific process, which is quite too technical to describe—-even if 1 could understand it. myself. The cassette is composed of an outer envelope which is perforated to allow' the steam to escape, and is made of tinfoil and waterproof paper. Inside this is a laver of pure cellulose absorbent wadding, and inside this again is a pervious envelope containing the heat-producing substance. The cassette is dipped in water for a second or two before being fastened over the curler. The water soaks through to llie exothermic centre, which reacts and generates steam. And there it is! If you can follow all that technical jargon you have the story of - this new and simvdified method of giving a, permanent wave. I saw a client being treated bv this method. The heal is so regulated and so well insulated that there is not the slightest feeling of discomfort, and the freedom to move about was much appreciated. This system can be used in a home by a trained operator just; as easily as in a hairdressing salon, sim-c there is no machine -to bother with. Invalids and delicate persons will appreciate this point. There are other advantages. It is claimed that risk of damage to the structure of the hair, its color and texture, is entirely ediminuted. Also, the wave takes longer to grow out, since the hair can he waved nearer to the scalp than fly any other method. One of the inventors of this system is an Australian, Dr. N. V. S. Knibhs, D.Sr., the son of the late Sir George Knibhs. Dr. Knibhs has made his home in England for many years, and is one of the best-known research chemists in Britain. He has specialised in research work in connection with heat-producing, and his studies in that field led him to the discovery of this invention. Its initial stages had been worked out by Mr. Peter Snrtory, an English hairdresser, who had found the need for an improvement in mechanical hairwaving.— Sydney Morning Herald correspondent.
