Later in the week a bundle of clothing was found on the beach at Brighton and identified by a relative as his property. Police inquiries failed to trace Thirled], and it was thought that he had gone swimming and got into difficulties. A man thought to be Thirkell was seen in Melbourne some time ago, and inquiries revealed that it was the supposedly missing man.
