RETURNS FOR JANUARY HIGHER VALUE OF EXPORTS ' GROWING STERLING BALANCE A substantial increase in the value of exports is shown, by the. returns; of overseas trade in January, issued by the Customs Department m Wellington. TJe recorded value was almost £I,OOU,UOU (Treater than the total for December, and £600,000 more than for January last year. The latter comparison must be qualified by the recollection that the rise m overseas exchange occurred toward the end •of January last year, and that the value of part of that month’s exports was expressed in currency of which the value was different from that for this The value' of imports was £6oo£W ■rfeater ihan in December, and some £246.700 higher than in January last year, when the figure was at an unusua ly low level. T Following is a comparison of the January returns in the last, five years :
The value of exports last month shows h gradual return toward the levels of i 960 and 1229, in which latter year the record for the month was established. The sterling equivalent of balance for the month is a bout £1,766,000, as against £1.870.000 for January last year. Returns for the seven months of the production year show a total value for expoits m New Zealand currency highei tiiau for any similar period since 1929r30, the increase in comparison with 1932-33 haviim been £3,644.000. Imports, valued on sterling basis, are £629,000 less than in the corresponding period of the pre_ vious year. Following is a summary of returns for recent years: —

In 1931-32 a surplus of exports was produced in six ijionths, and this was increased by each .subsequent monthly return. • In 1932-35 exports were greater than imports during six of the first seven months of the production season, the reverse position appearing in September only. During the current season even that exception bps been absent, every month having shewn exports ip excess of imports.
