On the subject of the street improvement scheme, Dr. Rice explained to the meeting that he represented, members of the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society who were interested in the proposals advanced by the Publicity League. He mderstood that the league proposed to ■o-eperate with Hie Gisborne Beautifying Society, but unfortunately that society mid not vet come into existence, plans' having been made for a public meeting at ail early date to inaugurate the society, up,to the present, the work of the proposed society had been carried on by enthusiasts in gardening, and doubtless these enthusiasts would form the nucleus of the new body, when it Was formed. He regretted that the organisation was not yet, complete, added Dr. Rice, but he assured the league that there would be adequate support for its proposals from the garden-lovers of the town.
After some discussion, it was agreed that the street improvement scheme be oroceeded with utukr the auspices of the league, and that all interested members of the public be invited to co-operate. The major proposal is that streets lined with turf fringes outside the metal should be trimmed and kept in good condition by a general scheme incorporating the use of relief labor for the initial levelling and sowing of the ground, and the employment of a boys’ brigade in keeping the grass mowed, where householders are unable to undertake abat work opposite their own properties, f Tlie. Mayor .intimated. that relief labor would be made available for the initial stage of the scheme, and it was decided also to apply to the various merchants for donations of grass-seed.for planting purposes.
Afr. T. G. Johns offered, on behalf of the Poveity Bay Winter Show Association, to inaugurate a special photographic section at the forthcoming Winter Show, i for flie principal purpose of selecting suitable photographic subjects for the work of the Publicity League. It was agreed that the league could furnish- prizes for the section, and that- the efforts of amateur photographers might produce excellent material for the league's publicity campaign.
Before the close of the meeting, discussion returned to the subject of the beautifying society, and on the motion of Mr. Sanders it was decided to assist in the formation of the society by advertising the public inaugural meeting.
