The Germany of To-day

, THE following is taken from the J 1 novel by Balder Olden, “Dawn of ■Darkness.” The author is a young German exile who lias penned a vivid tale of the Germany of to-day. Jt shows certain Nazi methods with a tierce .and relentless scrutiny. This quotation raises the poiut as to what Hitler would do if he were a Frenchman:—r “ ‘Hans told me he couldn't guarantee to be punctual. He’s always speeding to and fro on his motor-bike from daddy’s to the Ministry of Propaganda and back. Since daddy’s been in the Government again, Hans has been worked to death, day and night. And what work! Always putting on the brake, slowing things down, delivering vetoes. It doesn’t suit him a bit. He’d like to see things move faster.’ “ ‘But your father has always been like that.’ • “ ‘He was a soldier, and thinks the new Government is just playing at soldiers, but doing it in such a noisy, challenging way that they are a real danger.’ 1 “ ‘He think’s they’ll go on beating | the big drum till the Preach marcii back into the Kuhr, doesn’t ho?’ “ ‘Yes.. If Hitler had been Chancel- : lor of France instead of Germany, the 'French and the Poles would have crossed the frontiers long ago, and inarched further in than they ever did before. But Schnierwind laughs and says they know quite well it’s only electioneering. He says they have their hands full without waging a preventive war against an unarmed nation. ’ “ ‘And if they attack us after all, Schnierwind will simply say the Jews are to blame.’ “ ‘Schnierwind is now drawing a huge salary from each of four dilferent sources —two as a minister with two portfolios, one as editor of Deutsche lliehe, and. one as a high official of the. National Socialist Party. ’t hen lie has his salary as a member of the Meichstag and his fees for broadcasting. lie’s not worrying about to-morrow.’ ”
