DEFECTIVE SIGNALS

FRENCH TRAIN SMASH PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS (Elec. Tel. Copyright— United Press Assn.) (Received Doc. 29, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dee. 27. The News-Chronicle’s Paris correspondent says that Charpentior, fireman of the Strasburg train, told the Lngny official inquiry that for the past 18 months both he and Daudigny had frequently reported signal failures, but the reports had not- even been acknowledged. Charpentier said his colleagues were afraid to report certain happenings for fear of losing their jobs or getting into bad books.

It is now revealed that Daubigny saved the Strasbourg express front a terrible disaster on November 24, when a tyre on one of the engine wheels became detached. He succeeded in stopping the train from a high speed in two minutes without derailing it. When the passengers realised what had happened they passed round the hat for him.
