ij Considerable concern is being expressed by farmers throughout the Wairairapa ‘relative to the rapid increase of rabbits. It is stated that a public ■meeting is to be called to appoint a deputation to wait on the Minister oi Agriculture urging the department to take more active steps to cope with the menace.
Three passengers and full ambulance equipment can, in addition to the pilot, bo carried in the new Fox Moth aeroplane which has been purchased by the Canterbury Aero Club. The machine, of British make, is due to arrive in Canterbury about tho .middle of March. The aeroplane is of the latest model and has a cruising speed of 105 miles an hour, compared with'about 90 miles an hour for each of the three Moths now in tho club’s service.
Fifteen years ago, a professor of languages at* St. Petersburg’s loading university ; two years later an escapee from Soviet bondage ; to-day—at the age of 62—one of tho 800 workers at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance---that is tho story of Professor John Leopold Howard, lie migrated to Western Aus. tralia in 1927, and, with little capital, settled on the land. Inexperience took its toll, but he secured a position as part-timo lecturer m the Perth University. For economic reasons the university was forced to dispense with his services. Ho then moved with his wife to Melbourne, but could not secure. a position in the Melbourne University, although the university officials realised that he was fully qualified to fill the post of lecturer in either French, German, or Russian. So to-day lie is a sustenance worker, penniless; most of Ids goods pawned. Among the “army” at the Shrine there is a remarkable variety of trades and professions.
