CERTIFIED RYE GRASS

GISBORNE APPLICATIONS AREA REDUCED BY HALF Gisborne applications for rye grass seed, certification represent an area substantially less than half of the total concerned in last year’s applications. The officer in charge of the work, Mr. M. A. Black, reported to-day that a total of only slightly over 2000 acres had been ordered for certification, compared with 4800 acres last year, lie expected to be able to start field inspcctions at the beginning of rrext week. Experience in Gisborne this year has been much the same as that in Hawke s Bay, where tho area entered for certification totalled just over 4000 acres, compared with approximately 10.000 acres last season.

It is believed that as a result of tljo reduced areas for certified seed the market should harden. Already a few inquiries have been received in Gisborne, the IhVst for some time, but it is early yet to say exactly bow prices will react. Business lias been stagnant here over the past month or so, but quotations have been about 8s 6d for mother seed and 7s 6d for permanent pasture. Stocks of first harvest seed are practically cleared.

Advice from Hawke’s Bay shows a reduction in prices recently. Some buying lias been done there at reduced rates, quotations having been reduced from 9s to 8s 3d for mother seed, some of which, it. was reported, changed hands at as low a figure as Bs. although much of what has been sold has not yet gone into consumption. Gisborne crops are later this season than last, and it is too early yet to. give any indication of the probable yields. Preliminary inspections reveal that there is a large amount of clover in the crops this year
