UNPAID CROWN RATES
PETITION TO HOUSE A FAVORABLE REPORT (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A largely signed Wairoa petition) praying that Parliament should set up mmission to investigate the position of Crown lands and local rating, - Wasi reported on by the Lands Committee of the House of Representatives, which yesterday gave a favorable rccommenda tion. Mr. D. W. Coleman (Lab., Gisborne) thanked the committee for its decision and strongly urged the Government tb take prompt action. The petition was the outcome of local bodies’ action, and they were all concerned from East Capo to Woodville. He did not need to labor the question, but would like to see a Parliamentary committee set up to take evidence from the petitioners. ( One instance showing how local bodies were prejudiced, Mr. Coleman said, had occurred in Gisborne, where tbo Police Department leased a residence and went on the valuation roll as the Crown, and then called on the lessee to reduce the rent bv the amount of the rates lie bad formerly paid to the Borough Council.
