LIQUOR IN U.S.A.

“DRY” ERA DOOMED “WETS” EXPECT VICTORY WASHINGTON, Oct. 23. As 33 States have voted for the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, it is necessary now for only three more to do so in order to bring about the end of the prohibition era. Between now and December 5 six more will vote, and it is considered certain that all six will join the *‘Wet” column. The Rockefeller Foundation is spending several hundreds of thousands of dollars in sending expert investigators to Canada and Europe to inquire into every known method of conveying liquor safely and sanely to the public. The Foundation’s experts favor a State monopoly in spirits, accompanied by sale, probably from Government stores, as in Canada, with hotels and restaurants licensed to sell beer aud light wines. The Hearst newspapers are strongly supporting the Rockefeller plan, affirming a belief that the demand for “speakeasies” will be. eliminated. It is expected that President Roosevelt. will appoint a Congress committee to frame legislation in the interval between December 5 and the New Year. The Beverage Dealers’ Association, at a meeting in Washington to-day, decided to ask that liauor taxes be low, and that breweries and distillers bo required to keep out of the retail business. Scotch whisky advertisements dominate some of the United States magazines. “Hoots mon, I'll be wi’ ye sune, if, as and when,” is one, the last four words referring to the date when repeal of prohibition .©ay be accomplished.
