Despite ;i high and treacherous wind, the Australian, John Cobb, driving a monster Napier-Itailton car at Brooklands, lowered the world’s records for the standing start kilometre, doing 88.14 miles an hour- and the standing start mile, doing 102.52 miles an hour. At the end of the mile, Cobb was travelling at nearly 150 miles an hour, which is dangerously close to the Brooklands track safety limit. His last gear ehango was made at 100 miles an hour.
