PRISONER'S REQUEST ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A request that he be flogged, instead of forfeiting any remission of the sentence he is now serving, was made by Charles Hayward, who, with Harris O’Neill, was brought before Mr. Justice Smith to-day for sentence for escaping from Mt. Eden gaol and stealing clothing. The judge said : he must impose a thorougiily deterrent sentence. O’Neill would be sentenced to three years’ hard labor, and Hayward to two years, to be served after their present sentences. Hayward: I have lost any remission of my present sentence through this act. If it lies in your power, Your Honor, I would sooner take a. flogging and leave the sentence as it is. His Honor: No, I cannot do that.
