An outbreak of fire occurred at the fttahuhu railway workshops on Monday when a tank containing boiling oil caught fire and burst in the biacKsmith’s shop. No serious damage was done. Under legislation which the Australian Government proposes to introduce, the life Assurance Act will be amended tc provide for the firing of tho surrendei value of industrial policies taken out with life assurance companies. The pre minms of these policies are usually pair l weekly to collectors, and cases of hardship have been cited, when, after paving for years, policy-holders are forced tc discontinue owing to illness or uriem ployment. It is stated that some companies voluntarily fix a surrender value in such cases, but the amendment will makftt it compulsory,
