AN ENORMOUS TASK
LAND REGISTER. RESTORATION The enormous task of restoring the Hawke's Rav Ijuirl register, which was destroyed when the earthquake and fire invaded t ho Lands and Deeds office, in Napier is gradually nearing finality, but the work is being impeded in a certain extent by the failure of property owners' and others with vested interests in lands to make their title deeds avail-
able to the district land registrar. Some 22.100 certificates of title have been issued so far m place of those destroyed, hut there are a further 5000 requiring attention. Half of these are in respect to native land. Combined with the work of restoring the register lias been the preparation of about 8000 certified copies of mortgages destroyed in the office at the time of the earthquake. The task of restoring the register, lias been successfully supervised by AR'- R E. Raird, district land registrar. A great amount of work, lias been involved, this being madb more difficult by the. nccesdty for carrying out the normal duties of the department at the same t into.
