THE WHEAT INDUSTRY
POLICY OF PROTECTION STRONG CONDEMNATTON (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Strong criticism of the wheat industry protetciou policy was made by a special committee of tin* ( hamber of Commerce, which has prepared n report for despatch to the Tariff Commission and all Parliamentarians. It states, inter alia: “It is a st taking anomaly that this country, to holster up a monopoly fostered by the Covet nnient. and to support prices* for wheat in New Zealand that are out of till reason compared to world values, should have to exact from the tax paver, under the Hanks Indemnity Act. iii the vicinity of fid per bushel to send our surplus wheat overseas. At the same time, our poultry producers cannot get the benefit of cheap wheat to enable them to prosecute their own primary' industry, and have to put up with the spectacle of overseas poultry producers and other buyers of Now Zealand wheat securing it at prices very substantially below those charged to the Now Zealand purchaser.”
