SHEEP PRICES FIRMING BREEDING EWES WANTED BIG WIDESPREAD DEMAND The market for Gisborne breeding ewes has firmed over the past few weeks. The demand is widespread, and a number of sales have taken placo to the Waikato and as far afield as Wanganui. The Waikato requires mainly the 5-yr. ewe, and tho prospects have improved so much over the past few weeks that u sharp rise has taken place in the quotations made by vendors. Some sales took place during’the past few days of 5-yr. ewes at 15s, or 2s 6d above prices reported less than a fortnight ago. While the main increase in values has been for 5-year-olds, 2-tooth ewes also have firmed, and deals have been effected recently up to 18s and 19s, or slightly better than earlier values. Wanganui has been on the market for 2-tooth i ewes and 2-tooth wethers off the shears, ' the wethers being quoted up to 12s. j Buying done to date has not been 1 extensive, but the belief is held that. I more will follow soon. During the ' past two seasons Gisborne flockmvners ; with surplus breeding ewes had to con-1 sign to Waikato because of the rcluc-; tanee of Waikato farmers to buy for- j ward. Present indications, however,! point to the previous custom of foi> ! ward buying being reverted to au/d! that few farmers should need to send their sheep through to the Waikato on consignment during the coming sum- i mer. It would appear, also, that those j who bought early this year have secur-' ed their requirements to better advantage than by waiting. | There is also a keen outside demand} for cattle, and it is estimated that, well over half of flu: 1100 cattle at i the recent fair were purchased by outside buyers. Borne of the 'purchases are bound for as far afield as Taihapc. Others were sent to Whakatamj and Hastings.
