America defeated Franco by four matches to one in a professional tennis contest, including Barnes defeated Plaa, 7—o, 4—6, (i —3, 0—1; Tilden beat Cocliet, o—3, 6—4, o—2;0 —2; Tilden and Barnes defeated Cocliet and Plaa, o—2,0 —2, 4 —o, o—l, 6—4. Despite the fact that he was aged 40 years, against Cochet's 32, Tilden reproduced his old form and completely outplayed and outlasted the Frenchman, who failed to stand the strain of a terrifically fast first sot. Cocliet was unable to cope with the speed of Tilden’s returns.
