PRICE LEVELS COMPARED PRESENT AND PRE-WAR A comparison of current prices for primary products with rates ruling before the war shows a somewhat close approximation, with 1933 levels lower, except for lamb and merino wools. The following table compares the latest prices available on the London markets and those current during September, 1913: —

The disparity in present values between merino wools and the lower grades reflects the fashion now prevailing for fine wools. This difference was not so apparent in 1913, when possibly demands for wool for military purposes kept the coarse crossbreds at a comparatively high level. There are many good dance floors in Taranaki, and most of them are of heart rimu. There is the possibility, however, that matai will be found to be better. A New Plymouth timber firm has recently I teen asked by an agent for a British principal to quote for three shipments of 50,000 ft. of 4in. by lin. heart matai. It is known that matai is a very durable wood and polishes well and, following recent tests in England, it is thought that the timber is required for ballroom floors.
