MATAWAI NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The large assemblage of parents and friends gathered in Mr. S. Willau’s woolshed last Friday evening to farewell Miss K. Bilham was a great tribute to the esteem in which the popular Homebrook teacher was held The School Committee, assisted by the ladies of the district, organised the function. The Matawai basketball team, of which Miss Biihaiu was a noted defender, was well represented. Although floor space was limited on account of the crowd, dancing was much enjoyed, the music being supplied by Mr. dlunt; Mrs. Melirtens and Mr. (i. A. Robb played delightful extras. Mr. C. Wattou acted as M.C. During the evening eulogistic speeches were made by Messrs. N. G. Harding, J. K. Briant, and L. Self on. Mr. Harding referred to tho guest of the evening as a good sport, always being on the spot when needed, and playing the game throughout. Mr. J, K. Briant, as past chairman of the School Committee, spoke of Miss Bilham’s work as a teacher, mentioning her 100 per cent, of passes for proficiency pupils, and congratulated her on the success of her efforts, which were sometimes carried on under difficulties. Mr. Seftou expressed tho regret oi pupils and parents alike at losing Miss Bilham from the school, and on behalf oi the children and settlers wished her every success in the future, and presented her with a beautiful xylonite set.

Williams; Misses Bilham, Kippenberger, Jacobs (2), Fielder, Em merson, Scholium, Greaves, Richardson, and Drummond; Messrs. G. A. Robb, 15. Clark, A. McTavish, Jacobs (3), A. Marshall, J. K. Briant, J. Peddle, Thompson (2), R. Leggett, S. Sinton. T. Scholium, R. Mortlemnn, J. McPherson, Kenny (21, Mitchell, Stevens, Engehretsen, McDonald. Graltam, N. 0. Harding. McKenzie, Backhouse, Weber (2), McKenzie, Drummond (2), E. Lynch. Rawlings, Tipu (2). and Parsons.
