Reference to the piart Sir Thomas Beeeham. had played in trying to pro vide opera for the people at a reasonable price was made by Mr. Anderson Tyrer. examiner of the Trinity College of Music, London, when addressing Gisborm Rotarians to-day. He said that Sir Thomas had done more for opera in Britain than anyone else. He had lost, hundreds of thousands of pounds in trying to bring opera to the masses. H* has done all lie could, and could go no further. “To see the members’ stand at Hie race meetings, one would think the clnb was very strong in membership,” commented one speaker at to-day’s- meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club, who pointed out that there was little incentive to people to become members, when I it was obvious that many who were not I members could secure and enjoy all the benefits of-club membership. There, was general agreement on the point that club privileges should he more jealously guarded and that a general tightening up of conditions governing entry to the stanch and birdcage should' be made. A return snooker tournament betweeit teams representing the Cosmopolitai Club and the, Gisborne Club was played on Thursday evening on the Gisborm Club’s tables. Several interesting game; were played, and. the Cosmopolitan team finished-up the winners by six games t< four; their margin.of victory would have been wider hut for the defeat of two ol their novice players by the. remarkable score of 118 to six. The losers, win have shown some promise in the past potted only one red each, and were givei the other four points. The evening was a most enjoyable one, and the visitors from the Cosmopolitan Club were mos* hospitably entertained.
