N.Z. TITLE-HOLDERS ALL CHAMPIONS BEATEN Mo KAY WINS FLYWEIGHT (Per Press Association.) BLENHEIM, last night. The New Zealand amateur boxing championships were brought to a conclusion on Saturday night before a packed and enthusiastic crowd, which was'delighted at the excellent bill of fare provided. In the finals of the various classes the new champions are:— Feather: C. Raynor (Marlborough). Flyweight: W. McKay (Gisborne). Bantam: K. Williams (Auckland). Middle: 11. E. Neal (Auckland). Light-heavy: F. Bell (Greymouth). Heavy: A. Busier (Marlborough). Welter: W. Furdie (Auckland). Lightweight: Iv. Furdie (Auckland). In tio case was a championship successfully defended. In addition to a championship medal, R. Furdie won the .Parisian. Cup, which was being competed for for the lirst time, and the Jamieson Belt, while W. Furdie won the Morgan Cup. The most spectacular bout of the evening was the Until in the heavyweight class between Easier (Marlborough) and Limlosay, who, though boxing for Auckland, is a natal rating. Both stood in the centre of the ring .most of the time trading blow for blow and had Ihe crowd wild w ith excitement, especially when the judges announced their verdict in favor of the local man, though it must have been by a very narrow margin.
In the bantam class, Williams (Auckland) defeated Larsen (Wellington) after a great mill in which the former’s strength turned the scales. In tin' hast round, Larson was down for six but came again and finished full of light. Koguski (Taranaki) yielded the middle title to Neal (Auckland) after a rather dreary exhibition in which the Aucklander nicely shaded his opponent. Neither is a scientific boxer. The light-heavy final proved a great, “go,” in which Bell was always
a trifle ahead on points. His opponent hardly knew how to handle him. as he had some stagey ring tricks
up his sleeve. 0. Rayner brought Marlborough the second championship in annexing the feather title from Hawes, but there was not much in it and many in the crowd would not have been surprised if the verdict had gone the other way. A really unpopular verdict was that by which McKay (Gisborne) got the decision in the flyweight class over Gordon (Taranaki) for, though the winner was the more rugged, Gordon seemed to do most of the work. The judges were probably impressed by McKay’s clean hitting. W. Francis (Otago) and R. Furdie (Auckland) fought a very close thing in the lightweight and the decision in the Aucklander’s favor was not received with general approval. Hovyever, he showed more finish than his opponent, who relied largely on his obvious superiority in strength. \V. Furdie and Candy put up a nice exhibition in the welter final, but the Aucklander was always a shade ahead on points. The tournament was a great success from all points of view, there being packed crowds day and night The results of Saturday’s bouts are as follows: Flyweight.— Semi-finals: AY.
