OTTAWA AGREEMENT
CANADA WELL SATISFIED TRADE INCREASED ' Canada appears to be well satisfied with the results of the Ottawa agreement. \ ' The general policy of granting Imperial preferences in Britain has now been in operation fori over a year, since April, 1932, .state's the Montreal Star. At the end of May last the Ottawa Conference agreements had been in force just six months. One may, therefore, get some idea of how they are working. Export figures released by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics show that Canada’s sales to the British Empire, and particularly tho United Kingdom, are well ahead of last year’s. Exports to Great Britain in May last totalled 17,876,000 dollars (£3,575,200), an increase of 5,704,000d01., or 46 per cent over the previous May. Taking all Empire countries, the increase was 6,395,000 dollars, or 41 per cent. For the six-month period since the Ottawa agreements went into effect, from December to May, Canadian exports to the United Kingdom have gained 11,322,000d01., or 16 per cent,, while to all Empire countries they have gained somewhat less, 9,808,000 dollars, since it has (nken longer to adjust trade with many of them to the new conditions. The May export to Australia was the largest total for any month since March, 1930, showing that the. Canadian-Australinn agreement i» producing results. The figures in general indicate that, the Ottawa agreements are progressively giving better and better results, with the May figures the best, yet. It is really hopeful to notice large gains over tho previous year, suggesting that, bottom Was hit in Empire trade during 1932.
