HOCKEY

FIRST ROUND ENDS FORESTERS A ON TOP The first round of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association’s men’s senior competition was brought to a close yesterday, and Foresters A remains at the top of the championship table. Yesterday's results were:— —Seniors— Foresters A 2, Y.M.C.A. 0. Defence 1, Waituhi 1. Y.M.P. 6, Foresters B 3. —Juniors— High School A 3, Y.M.C.A. 2. Foresters 4, High School B 1. Yesterday’s results gave Y.M.C.A. its first defeat of the season, and allowed Foresters to take the lead without the loss of any championship points, which are now distributed among the competing teams as follows: Foresters A, 10 points; Y.M.C.A., 8; Y.M.P., 6; Defence and Waituhi. 3 each; Foresters B, 0. The High School A team leads the junior grade, having so far suffered no loss. EVEN SENIOR GAMES Two very even games were played in the senior grade, and the meeting between the hitherto unbeaten teams created the most interest. This was between Foresters A and Y.M.C.A. Boon teams played good hockey and put plenty of sting into their work, but on occasions just a little too much spirit was shown. Good combined work was a feature of the game for the most part, but the Y.M.C.A. circle work lacked decisiveness at the critical moments, with the result that no goals were scored by the red triangle team, while Foresters finished with two to their credit. Foresters, on the othei hand, were on the ball all the time. Jones got t!ie first of Foresters’ two scores, accepting a pass in the circle from the wing, and netting a nice goal. Tt. Turbitt secured the next by following the ball through from the 25 line. Messrs. P. Sim and H. C. D. Wade were the referees.

The Defence-Waituhi game, which ended in a draw, one goal apiece, was not a very good exhibition. It was fast and very even, but sticks and obstruction were a little too pronounced on both sides. Waituhi missed with a couple of shots early in the game, and then Defence kept up a sustained attack, Tupara, the Maori team’s fullback, gave a very sound display, and put his side on the attack. Scholium saved by hitting over the back line, and from the resulting penalty corner Swan broke away, but, in centring, gave sticks. In a counter-attack, G. Pere missed with a hot shot, and halftime came without a score. Defence made the pace early in the second half. Wilson put in a good shot, but C. Pere stopped; he was slow in clearing, however, and Watts, following in fast, opened the scores. The Maoris broke away shortly after, and C. Pere accepted a pass, and scored, making the scores e'ven, when time was caMed, The referees were Messrs. T. File and. C. Davy.

Rather a ragged game with little team work was played by Y.M.P. and Foresters B, won by the former by 6 goals to 3. Foresters B showed much improvement, particularly in tile second spell, when the team scored all of its three goals against only one secured by Y.M.P., the Maori team having put on five in the first half. For the winners, Hale scored three, S. Moeau two, and P. Kaua one. Parkin, Clark and Watt scored one each for Foresters. THE JUNIOR GRADE

The High School A team maintained its unbeaten record by the odd goal in five against Y.M.C.A. It was an even and fast game, both sides showing improved team play, and with Y.M.C.A. making High School strain every effort to secure the. winning goal. The half-time score was 2—2. Goals were scored by Langhome, Smiler and Fraser for High School, while Doyle secured both for Y.M.C. A. Messrs. T. and G. File refereed.

Foresters beat High School I* by four goals to nil, Post securing two and Prentice and Hutchinson one each. It was a good, even game, but Foresters had an exceptionally sound full-back in Carroll, while Post in the forwards was also good. Baskin at half was the outstanding High School player, with Bignell, on the wing, also doing good work. The referees were Messrs. H. K. Swan and G. Graham.
