HOCKEY COMPETITIONS
LADIES START THIS WEEK ENCOURAGING YOUNG PLAYERS The encouragement of young players has received greater attention by Ihe Poverty Bay Hockey Associat ion this year than in the past., and a.t. the weekly meeting of the management committee lasi night arrangements were furthered in regard to junior competitions for both ladies and men. Mr. J. Henderson was in the eh air, and lie commented on the satisfactory opening of the men’s competition on Thursday. Four entries came forward for the num.’s junior competition, two bong from the High School and one ran from Fo;esters and Y.M.C.A. It was decided to open the competition oi: Thursday, but as the High School was at present oa vacation, I lie match between these two teams would be postponed until next. week. It was also decided to make a strong endeavor to form a ladies’ .junior competition for Saturday play, for, judging by comments made by delegates, there appeared to be good prospects of this being accomplished. It was: agreed that, if such a competition were inaugurated, an age limit, of IS years would be fixed. Five entries were received for the Indies’ senior competition, and it was decided to open this next Saturday. An attempt was made to secure a men’s Saturday competition, but only one entry was received, that of Foresters. It'was believed, however, that it should be possible to secure a combined Maori team and also ono from tho Civil Service, and it was agreed to make inquiries ’ into this possibility. A meeting will be held on Friday night to further this aim.
A report containing recommendations for grounds improvements was received from Mr. W. Paltridge, who suggested the lifting of the turf in hollow spots and the filling of these with earth before replacing the turf. Uneven places in the cycle track should bo done in a similar manner, and by such means an even field should he secured. Tho recommendations were adopted, and Dir. Paltridge thanked for his report. The appointment of a selector or selection committee was discussed, but eventually it was agreed to leave this matter over to a, future meeting, when it would be possible for tho chairman to be in attendance. It was agreed that, in an endeavor to popularise tho game, no admission should be charged for Thursday matches. Matches for this week were set down as follows: —
