BASKETBALL

LAST WEEK'S MATCHES RAISING TOURNAMENT fUNDS 'J'lie Poverty Bay Basketball Association’s competition games were continued in bright sunshine last Thursday and Saturday, although the keen wind on Thursday made it rather chilly for speela tors. The dance held by the association last week was a financial success, and a I nether considerable sum has been added to the tournament fund.

Athletic A and 13 teams have topped the list for the tournament fund, these two teams having raised and .handed in £5 (£2 100 s per team). In this they have not been helped by their parent Athletic club, but have raised the amount by social Functions and small competitions. These two teams have proved a distinct asset to the association. Always neat, well behaved and good sports, they invariably help the association willingly, giving generously even when their teams derive little benefit. Lust year they did not begrudge their help, as some teams did, to finance the representative team, although their club was not represented in if. During the season they paid their own fares to Matawai to give the country girls a game against a town team. This year they were very prominent among the workers at the dance, and now they are the first teams to hand in their money to help along the tournament.

It is very pleasing to hear that most of tho teams are arranging early morning practices this year. This should improve the general standard of play considerably if players turn out regularly. L T sually the slackers are tho ones most in need of practice, and those who do turn out become disheartened, and the practices are dropped. Perhaps this year, with several referees offering their assistance in the mornings, the girls will make an effort to have good practices. On Monday next another referees’ meeting will he held, when rules and questions will 'be discussed, and as much help as possible will be given to the new referees.

THURSDAY’S RESULTS Following are the results of Thursday’s games:— A grade.—Cash Stores defeated liuia, 14-11; H.S.O.G. defeated Athletic A, 8-5; Brownies defeated Athletic B, 18-10; Ex Cash Stores defeated Triangle A, 20-15. B grade.—All Blacks defeated Triangle B, 14-0. Cash Stores’ victory over Huia was more or less of a surprise, as most people thought Huia much the better team. At half-time the score was 7-6 in favor of Huia, Cash Stores’ passing being very slow. However, in tho second half Cash Stores improved considerably, and the score ended in their favor by three goals.

H.S.O.G. v. Athletic A was rather disappointing in the first half, play being very ragged on both sides. In the second half 11.5.0. G. improved noticeably and the passing became much snappier, their opponents improving likewise, the score ending in favor of H.S.O.G. Tho most interesting match of the afternoon was that between Brownies and Athletic B. The latter team played excellently and Miss Jean Dixie in the goal scored almost every time she held tho ball in a suitable shooting position, while Miss Rlioda Hewitson was most noticeable for hot work iu defence, jumping well and keeping Her opponent well guarded right through the' game. The Brownies had to play hard to beat Athletic B, and it was only in the last 10 minutes of the game that, tho score began to be in their favor. Of the new players in this team, Mrs. ,T. Robertson was most worthy of mention, her defence being very sound. Triangle fielded quite a good team against Ex Cash Stores, and tho game was very oven throughout, Ex Cash Stores’ victory being mainly due to the very accurate shooting of Miss R. Flowman.

There was only one game in the B grade owing to the holidays. All Blacks defeated Triangle B. The winning team has quite a good style of play if the members were only more consistent. The Trianglo B team has many beginners, and. of course, little combination as yet, so that All Blacks had no difficulty in securing a convincing win.

SATURDAY’S GAMES Following are the results of Saturday's games:— A Grade.—Tni defeated Celtic, 17 -12; H.S.O.G. defeated New Team, 13- -11, B Grade,—U.S.O.G. defeated Kiwi, 9—5. ,

. Tho Tui-Celtic game was one of the fastest club games seen in Gisborne, and the spectators enjoyed the snappy passing and good combined play of both sides. The game was very keenly contested and after tho first 10 minutes, when Tuis gained a lead of three goals, the teams seemed to get goal for goal until a. run of three near the end gave Tuis the victory. Celtic have a splendid trio ol goal-throwers whose perfect handling of the hall and understanding of each other’s play enabled them to break through (ho Tui defence, which was about as strong as any local club has had. This, however, was the strongest part of the Celtic team, whilo Tuis were strong in every third, every girl doing her part to make for speed, combination and victory. H.S.O.G. A had a very narrow win from tho new team of A grade players which has been formed to absorb extra girls wishing to play on Saturdays. The spectators’ were delighted with the form shown by these girls, who have never played together before. Combination was lacking, but they made up for this by very sure catching, accurate passing and good shooting. If they are keen enough to practise together regularly they will most certainly bo u distinct asset to the Saturday competition. H.S.O.G. A are capable of much better play than the form they displayed on Saturday- and ai several stages of the game it seemed as though the new team would win.

In tho B grade the H.S.O.G. B v. Kiwi game was quite even, but it was uninteresting from tho spectators’ point of view. The throwing was rather wild and inaccurate on both sides, resulting in a more or less ragged game with only occasional patches of quick, combined play. Following is tho draw for this week’s games:— —Thursday.—

A Grade.—Huia v. H.5.0.G., No. 2 ground, 2 p.m., referee, Miss M. McKinley; Ex-Cash Stor.se v. Athletic A, No. 1 ground, 2.4.3 p.m., Miss E. Wallace; 'Brownies v. Triftmgle. Olympic, No. 1 ground, 2 p.m., Mr Ansell; All' Blacks v. St. M.B.S. B, lb bo arranged after the holidays. —Saturday.—
