CRUISER BAND

PLAYS WRONG- ANTHEM MADRID, March 2G. ,An anthem played by a British naval band nearly provoked an international incident in the Spanish port of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. As a visiting British cruiser entered the port it passed a Spanish naval training ship, and the band had been lined up on the deck to play the Spanish “national” Anthem in her honor.

The Spanish officer had drawn up his cadets smartly at attention in reply, when he heard the opening bars of the Spanish “Royal” National Anthem blaring out. Hurriedly countermanding his order, the startled British commander shouted down a query to the band, .the Republican March was hastily dragged from a dozen music-cases, and substituted for the offending tune, and international harmony was restored.
