MATCH AGAINST PARNELL FIRST INNINGS WIN PROBABLE CENTURY TO G. J. ROBERTSON' At 3.30 o’clock this afternoon it appeared a certainty that the match at the Oval between Parnell and Poverty Bay would be decided in the Bay’s favor 011 the first innings, at the close of which the homesters had a lead of 53- runs. Poverty Bay put up a splendid performance against the strong Auckland combination this afternoon, and with one wicket in hand, they declared with a score of 228, to which Robertson had contributed 100 by steady, careful bajsinanship. At the hour named Parnell in their second strike had scored 16 runs without loss. Boon went at 12.1 v 2 p.m. with 132 on the board, after scoring 36, being caught by M. Wallace off Whitelaw. Ward was next man in, and at the luncheon adjournment Poverty Bay bad scored 147 with three wickets down.
Goodsir struck a patch after the adjournment, and was responsible for the dismissal of three of the home batsmen in quick succession. Ward was the first to go, being caught in the slips by M. Wallace off Goodsir for nine. Lockett followed, and after he had scored eight ho was caught by Duncan off Goodsir, with 163 on the board.
E. 11. Dow, the seventh man in, survived two balls before ho was skittled by Goodsir for a duck. Fraser then joined Robertson, and this pair stopped the rot, Robertson was still scoring slowly, but lie managed to hit the first ball of Hawke’s second over for a four, and at 2.30 p.m. 190 went on to the boai’d, Robertson at that stage having contributed 74 and Fraser 12. Robertson was run out by a brilliant Ithrow in. by the ■ left-lmnded Aucklander, Vivian, when he had scored exactly 100. Fraser got his leg before to McCoy after he had contributed 17, and P. H. Dow was dismissed by the same bowler without scoring. Witli nine wickets down for 228 Poverty Bay declared, the not out man being B. Scholium. McCoy bowled 37 overs, and took four wickets for 93 runs, while Goodsir took three for 4<>. Whitelaw and Vivian opened Parnell’s second innings against the bowling of E. H. Dow, and Whitelaw scored a brace off the second ball, and later a single, while Vivian hit the last ball of the over for a single. Ward came on at the seaward end. The annual cricket match, Auckland and! Victoria University Colleges, was continued to-day. In tho first innings, Victoria scored 51. and Auckland 203. To-day, Victoria, in the second innings, had scored 171 for two wickets before lunch.
