COLLINS SHIELD WIN 4GISBORNE TEAM’S SUCCESS FINE SHOOTING AT HASTINGS One of the most elaborate and valuable trophies now available for competition throughout New Zealand passed into the temporary possession 01 the Uisoorno Defence Kilie Club 011 Saturday at Hastings, when a team comprising F. J. Jeune, captain, W. Sherriff, It- 0. Miles and E. Pirie carried off the Coffins Challenge Shield in a contest at three ranges with nine other teams from various parts of Hawke’s Bay. The shield was formerly held by Okawa, which club was again represented in strength, but was beaten on this occasion bv both Gisborne and Napier. The winners aggregated three points more than the Napier team which filled the place of runner-up. The annual shoot of the Hawke’s Bay

Rifle Association gathered a large number of enthusiasts,, and' though conditions were rather tricky, with a. flickering .wind coming now from the right hand ' and again from the left, the standard of shooting was very high. In the Collins Shield match, the teams shot from 300* 509 and 600yds. ranges, and of a possible 430 P oints, the Gisborne team aggregated 393, with Napier running close with 390. The individual scores of the

Gisborne team were.— J. Jeune, 300yds 33, 500yds 35, iS&OOyds 33, total 10i; W. Sherriff, 33, *32, 34, 99; F„ C. Miles, 33, 34, 32, 99; E Pirie, 30, 31, 33, 94. In addition to the Collins Shield win, the Gisborne team carried off other honors i though these were offset by the loss, by F. J. Jeune, of the Hawke’s Bay championship belt by the margin oj a singlo point. The now champion of the meeting was R. Nicholson, of Napier, a fine shot and a worthy chainSkui. Jeune made amends by winning rapid-fire match, with 41 out of a * possible 50, and the 500yds match with 48 out of 50; his other places being second in the 500yds match, tliird at 600yds, and second in the championship and optional aggregates. W. Sherriff was placed fourth in the rapid-fire match, and E. Pirie and R. C. Miles each gained tyro awards in the 600yds and 500yds matches respectively. the Gisborne team owed a great deal to the coaching of the captain, whose judgment of conditions and steadying advice counted. largely in the aciiievenfents recorded during the meeting.
