MAN SHOT IN GROIN
SENSATION AT MERCER “I AM DESPERATE” (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night A sensational shooting affray .occurred at Mercer at 10.30 o’clock this evening when a service station keeper, Janies Pennington Bates, was injured by a shot in the groin by a man who ordered benzine but was unable to pay for it. It is believed that the occupant of the car, which was a “baby,” came from Auckland and that the car had been stolen from Beach road earlier in the evening. After having ordered and received benzine, he put air in the tyfes and re-entered the vehicle and began to drive off.
Mr. Bates jumped on the running board of the car, which was stopped in a short distance. The driver alighted and went to the rear of the car. He said: “I am desperate; I have no money.” Mr. Bates said: “You can’t? get away with that.” His assailant then drew a revolver and fired two shots, one of which struck Mr. Bates in the groin. H ; s assailant then drove off in a southerly direction.
